What is jaw surgery for protrusion or retrusion?

Jaw correction surgery is a procedure that directly modifies the jawbone structure to correct abnormalities in the facial skeleton. It is typically recommended for patients with protruding jaws caused by excessive jawbone growth.

According to maxillofacial experts, jaw surgery is not as dangerous as many people think. With modern technology and highly skilled surgeons, Vietnam now performs these procedures safely and effectively, ensuring both functional and aesthetic outcomes.

The level of safety largely depends on two key factors:

  • Technology and equipment  –  especially the use of specialized maxillofacial bone-cutting machines, which allow for precise and gentle incisions, minimizing trauma during surgery.
  • Surgeon expertise  –  while technology plays a supportive role, the success of the surgery primarily depends on the surgeon’s skill and experience.

What to prepare before and
after jaw correction surgery

Jaw correction surgery

Before surgery

A thorough examination and consultation at a reputable maxillofacial hospital are essential. Once the jaw condition is evaluated, the surgeon will determine whether surgery is necessary to correct the protruding jaw.

Before the operation, patients must undergo a comprehensive health check to ensure they are fit for surgery. X-ray imaging of the jaw plays a crucial role in assessing the degree of protrusion and planning the expected correction results.

During surgery

General anesthesia is administered to ensure the patient feels no pain or discomfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon performs jawbone trimming through the area of the fourth tooth inside the mouth, so there will be no visible external scars after the operation.

After surgery

Facial swelling is normal and typically lasts 3 – 7 days, depending on each person’s condition. Patients usually remain in the hospital for 24 – 42 hours for observation.

If no complications occur, they can go home for recovery and take prescribed medications as directed. Following the dentist’s instructions during the healing period helps ensure a faster and safer recovery.

Post-surgery care

To promote proper bone healing and recovery:

  • Take all prescribed medications (antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, anti-swelling drugs) as instructed.
  • Eat porridge or liquid foods for the first 3 days, then switch to soft foods.
  • Maintain oral hygiene as advised by your dentist.
  • Attend all follow-up appointments as scheduled.
  • Avoid vigorous activities, sports or driving immediately after surgery.
  • Apply cold compresses regularly to reduce swelling.
  • Increase calcium intake to support bone healing.

After about one month, the jawbone typically heals completely and normal activities can be resumed.
