Dental implant placement is a modern tooth restoration method used to replace missing teeth. It involves placing an artificial tooth root into the jawbone at the site of the lost tooth, with a porcelain crown attached on top to function and appear like a natural tooth.
A dental implant consists of three main components:
Step 1: Treatment planning and selecting the appropriate implant post
Based on the jawbone volume, bone structure and bite condition, the dentist will choose the most suitable implant post for each patient.
Step 2: Exposing the gum, drilling and placing the implant post
The dentist will make a small incision in the gum to access the jawbone, then use specialized drills to create space and insert the artificial implant post. The implant is placed directly into the jawbone at the site of the missing tooth. The diameter and length of the implant are selected to match the original tooth root.
Step 3: Placing the healing abutment to shape the gum
After placing the implant, the dentist will attach a healing abutment to shape the gum immediately, avoiding the need for a second surgery later.
After the implant post is placed, it requires 2 – 3 months to integrate with the jawbone (osseointegration), depending on the implant type. Once the implant is stable, the dentist will remove the healing abutment, take an impression and fabricate the porcelain crown. The finished crown is then attached to the implant post using a special bonding material.
